11 Russians Detained on Terrorism Suspicion in Tunisia Released

11 Russians detained in Tunisia on allegations of terrorism-related activities have been released and are expected to return home Friday.

According to Russian state media, the individuals were apprehended near the Algerian border, in the municipality of Haidra, an area known for its ancient Roman ruins but not commonly frequented by tourists.

Though Russian media described them as sightseers, Tunisian authorities reportedly seized equipment that did not match declared tourist intentions, the Russian embassy in Tunis said at the time.

Despite being held on suspicion of terrorism, the group was never formally charged. Both Russia and Tunisia have provided minimal information regarding the case.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, the embassy confirmed that tickets had been purchased, and the individuals would depart Tunisia on two separate flights during the day.
