Approximately 14,000 undocumented immigrants have been arrested since President Donald Trump took office, US Border czar Tom Homan told 77 WABC radio in an interview on Tuesday.
Border crossings have also decreased by 92% during the same period, he said, citing a significant reduction in the number of people entering without proper travel documents.
“We got the border locked down pretty good. We’re not done, but the borders are looking really good,” Homan said.
He noted that many of those arrested had criminal histories, though specific details were not provided.
He emphasized that over 600,000 undocumented immigrants in the US have criminal backgrounds, highlighting public safety concerns.
‘Low-risk’ migrants being sent to Guantanamo Bay
Meanwhile, CBS News reported that the Trump administration is sending nonviolent, “low-risk” irregular migrants to Guantanamo Bay, despite promises to detain only “the worst” there.
In recent weeks, Trump ordered the construction of a detention camp at Guantanamo Bay to hold up to 30,000 of the “worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people.”
Internal government documents reveal that some detainees lack serious criminal records or have none at all and are deported because of “civil immigration violations.”
These low-risk individuals are housed in a barrack-like facility, while high-risk detainees are held in maximum-security cells, according to the news outlet.
CBS said representatives for the Department of Homeland Security did not comment on the report. (Anadolu Agency)
