Segun Sowunmi, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for Peter Obi’s return to the party ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In a recent appearance on the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, Sowunmi argued that Obi stands a better chance of winning the presidency under the PDP’s broad and established political structure.

Reflecting on Obi’s strong showing in the 2023 election—where he secured over six million votes as the Labour Party candidate—Sowunmi noted that this was achieved without the usual support from governors or major political figures. He believes that with the PDP’s nationwide grassroots network and backing from key party stakeholders, Obi could dominate in strategic regions, including the South East, South South, North Central, and Christian-majority areas in the North.
According to him, Obi’s departure from the PDP in 2022 and the resulting split in opposition votes played a significant role in the PDP’s loss in the 2023 presidential race. A return by Obi, he said, could reunite and strengthen the opposition, giving the PDP a real shot at reclaiming power in 2027.
