Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 elections.
Mr Atiku made the declaration during an interview with DW Hausa aired on Saturday, emphasising his commitment to party unity and collective success ahead of the polls.
“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer. How many are we (presidential aspirants), three or four? In the PDP, more than ten of us contested,” he said.
Youth participation
The former vice president highlighted what he described as the growing influence of young people within the party, noting that many aspirants for elective positions are youths.
“The youths have taken over the party. Most of those seeking elective positions, from councillor to national assembly, are young people,” he said, adding that the party is committed to creating opportunities for youth and women.
When asked if he would back a young presidential candidate, Mr Atiku responded affirmatively, saying, “Yes, why not?”
ADC resilience
Mr Atiku dismissed concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission could weaken the ADC amid internal leadership disputes, including issues surrounding the David Mark-led faction.
He insisted that the party continues to gain nationwide support, attributing its challenges to pressure from powerful interests unsettled by its rising popularity.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s current situation, Mr Atiku expressed confidence that citizens are increasingly demanding change due to economic hardship and insecurity.
“We are confident that Nigerians are yearning for change. They are ready for it,” he said.
Security and economy
The former vice president linked rising insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, to youth unemployment and inadequate access to education.
“Insecurity is more severe in the northern states, largely due to youth unemployment and lack of access to education,” he said, urging greater investment in education and job creation.
He also criticised the government’s handling of corruption, alleging that it has failed to address the issue effectively.
The statement underscores efforts within the ADC to project unity ahead of 2027, while highlighting broader concerns about governance, insecurity, and economic challenges shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
