Broadcaster and political analyst Rufai Oseni, on Monday, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of attempting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the Frontage Review programme on Voice of the People FM, Mr Oseni warned that the move could undermine democratic competition in Nigeria.

Mr Oseni’s comments come amid growing political debate over preparations for the 2027 general elections and concerns about the state of opposition politics in the country.

During the programme, Mr Oseni alleged that the government was working to frustrate opposition parties to secure an uncontested political advantage in the next election cycle.

“This government is just going to try to frustrate any opposition. They want a sole candidate on the ballot,” Mr Oseni said.

He also criticised proposed legislative moves aimed at limiting election petitions, describing them as attempts to weaken democratic checks and balances.

“These people think we are foolish. They think we are idiots. Short of carrying arms, I don’t really know what we will do,” Mr Oseni said.

The analyst further described Nigeria’s current security environment as a “total failure” that cannot be justified by the authorities.

Recent reports have also highlighted internal disputes and legal challenges affecting major opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress.

Some political observers say these disputes could weaken opposition parties’ ability to mount a strong challenge in future elections.

President Tinubu’s “palliative strategy”

Mr Oseni also questioned recent political outreach programmes by supporters of the ruling party, particularly initiatives linked to the administration’s “Renewed Hope” campaign.

He suggested that the distribution of Ramadan palliatives by party ambassadors could be interpreted as a political strategy to build early electoral support rather than as purely humanitarian assistance.

The analyst warned that continued political manoeuvring could reduce voter confidence in democratic institutions if citizens begin to perceive elections as predetermined outcomes.

 Background

Mr Oseni framed the political developments as part of a broader struggle over the future of Nigeria’s democratic system.

He warned that voter apathy could ultimately determine the outcome of the 2027 elections if citizens fail to participate in the political process actively.

According to him, the responsibility for safeguarding democratic choice ultimately lies with the electorate, who must remain engaged to prevent erosion of political competition.
