The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said it will be difficult for opposition candidates to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja during the 2027 general elections.
Mr Wike made the statement on Wednesday, after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects across satellite towns in the FCT.
“It is very difficult for anybody to win an election in the FCT against Mr President,” Mr Wike said.
He added that the impact of infrastructure projects would translate into voter support for the administration.
Mr Wike said the Federal Government has shifted focus from city-centre development to expanding infrastructure in satellite communities.
He noted that areas such as Karu, Apo Kashi, and Bwari-Kubwa are witnessing major road construction and improved connectivity.
According to him, these projects are improving daily life, mobility, and economic opportunities for residents.
The minister’s comments signal growing confidence within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Analysts say improved infrastructure could influence voter behaviour in the FCT, especially in previously underserved communities.
However, the remarks also highlight rising political contests ahead of the next election cycle.
Political Reality
Despite Mr Wike’s confidence, the FCT delivered a different outcome in the 2023 presidential election.
Mr Peter Obi won Abuja with 281,717 votes, defeating President Tinubu, who polled 90,902 votes, and Mr Atiku Abubakar, who came third.
The result reflected strong urban voter sentiment at the time.
Infrastructure Push
Mr Wike said President Tinubu directed that development must extend beyond the city centre.
“We were clearly told that there shouldn’t be an over-concentration of development in the city,” he said.
He added that improved road networks have reduced travel time, with residents now commuting faster from areas such as Kuje to central Abuja.
Background
The FCT has become a key political battleground due to its diverse population and strategic importance.
With ongoing infrastructure projects and shifting political dynamics, analysts say Abuja will play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
