A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike has rejected reports of an alliance with the African Democratic Congress, despite high-level talks involving Seyi Makinde and other opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.

Opposition figures met on Wednesday at the Abuja residence of former Senate President David Mark, where discussions reportedly centred on forming a strategic alliance to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Sources within both parties said the closed-door meeting addressed possible collaboration, platform selection, power-sharing arrangements, and broader efforts to strengthen opposition politics.

Also present at the meeting were prominent figures including Atiku Abubakar, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi, and Abubakar Malami, among others.

Alliance talks

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Makinde described the gathering as a “show of solidarity,” noting that opposition leaders are committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic space.

“We came here to visit the leadership of the ADC… and to commit to a truly democratic space in our country,” Mr Makinde said, declining to confirm details of any alliance.

However, insiders said the parties agreed in principle to work together to provide a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

“They resolved that they must strategise together… to ensure there is a credible alternative for Nigeria,” a source disclosed, adding that discussions on a common platform—whether PDP, ADC, or another party—are ongoing.

Wike camp rejects claim

In contrast, the PDP faction backed by Mr Wike, through its National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed, denied any formal involvement in alliance talks.

“The PDP categorically states that it has not held any meeting, formal or informal, with the ADC,” Mr Mohammed said, stressing that any individuals involved acted in personal capacities.

Mr Mohammed added that the party remains focused on its internal processes, including preparations for upcoming primaries.

ADC protest and demands

The political developments coincided with a protest by ADC leaders and supporters at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja.

Led by Mr Mark and Mr Aregbesola, the protesters demanded recognition of the Mark-led National Working Committee and called for the resignation of INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan.

Placards carried during the protest bore inscriptions such as “Save Democracy” and “Let the Opposition Breathe,” reflecting growing concerns over alleged interference in opposition politics.

In a protest letter, ADC leaders accused INEC of partisanship and overstepping its constitutional mandate, warning of legal and civic actions if their demands are not met.

Opposition stance

Mr Abubakar said the protest was aimed at defending democracy and resisting authoritarian tendencies.

“Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship,” Mr Abubakar stated.

Similarly, Mr Obi urged Nigerians to actively defend democratic values.

“We say no to a one-party system… Nigerians must rise to defend democracy,” Mr Obi said.

Background

Both the PDP and ADC are currently facing internal leadership crises marked by factional disputes and ongoing court cases.

INEC recently declined to recognise factions within the ADC, citing a court order to maintain the status quo, further deepening the party’s crisis.

The ADC has since splintered into multiple factions, including those led by Mr Mark, Nafiu Gombe, and Dumebi Kachikwu’s camp.

Similarly, the PDP has experienced internal divisions, with Mr Wike’s camp consolidating influence following recent judicial developments.
