Ritualists or Spiritual Healers? Popular Anambra Native Doctors Remanded Over Alleged Ties to Criminals, Money Rituals

In a move that has sparked debate and outrage across Anambra State, three well-known native doctors — Chidozie Nwangwu (aka Akwa Okuko Tiwara Ki), Onyebuchi Okocha (alias “Onyeze Jesus”), and Ekene Igboekweze (“Eke Hit”) — were on Friday remanded in prison custody by a State High Court sitting in Awka.

Arraigned before Justice Jude Obiorah, the trio is facing serious allegations of aiding criminality through the preparation of charms and performing rituals allegedly linked to money-making practices. Their arrest about a month ago sent shockwaves across communities where they once commanded large followings.

Despite the gravity of the accusations, the native doctors pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Critics argue the clampdown is a politically motivated witch-hunt against traditional spirituality, while others say it’s a long-overdue move to curb a dangerous rise in ritual-related crimes.

Justice Obiorah ordered the defendants to be remanded in state custody until their next hearing on April 11, 2025.

The case continues to divide opinion in a state where traditional spiritual practices and modern law often clash.
