Police spokesperson Shi’isu Adam confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, revealing that preliminary investigations point to a deliberate act.

“The suspect poured a flammable substance, suspected to be petrol, on his father’s body and set him ablaze,” he said.

The incident occurred on April 1, 2026, around 6:30 a.m., in Magama Quarters, Kazaure town, prompting a swift law enforcement response following a resident’s report.

The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was severely burned and rushed to the hospital, but later died while receiving treatment.

Police said the suspect was arrested with visible burn injuries on his body, including his forehead, arms, and toes.

Police reaction

Mr Adam disclosed that the suspect is facing charges of patricide and remains in custody pending further investigation.

He added that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for detailed investigation and prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Haruna Yahaya, condemned the incident, describing it as heinous and unacceptable.

He assured the public that the command is working to uncover the motive behind the attack and ensure justice is served.

“We call on residents to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report any signs of domestic violence or conflict,” Mr Yahaya said.

Public appeal

The police urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing investigations, while appealing for useful information that could aid the case.

Authorities also reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.

The incident underscores the need for stronger community awareness, conflict resolution mechanisms, and timely intervention to address domestic tensions before they turn fatal.
