“80 Nigerian Migrants Returned Home by Libya After Detention”

The Libyan Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM), in collaboration with the Nigerian Consulate in Tripoli, has successfully repatriated 80 Nigerian migrants who were residing in Libya irregularly.

According to Migrant Rescue Watch, the deportation was carried out following judicial deportation orders issued by the Libyan Judicial Police. The migrants had previously been detained in various holding facilities across Libya and were transferred to Mitiga International Airport under strict security escort for their flight back to Nigeria.

The repatriation is part of ongoing efforts by Libyan authorities and foreign missions to manage irregular migration and ease overcrowding in detention centers. The Nigerian consulate coordinated closely with Libyan authorities to ensure the returnees received proper documentation and consular support during the process.

“The process was conducted in a humane and orderly manner, ensuring that all returnees were assisted and properly documented,” Migrant Rescue Watch said.

The 80 Nigerians are among hundreds of African migrants detained in Libya for attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea via irregular routes. Libya continues to serve as a major transit hub for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa seeking passage to Europe, often facing harsh conditions and human trafficking risks along the journey.

Authorities urged potential migrants to avoid irregular migration routes and seek legal pathways to travel abroad to ensure their safety.
