The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a new update to the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) aimed at improving the integrity of elections.
The update ensures that the BVAS devices automatically reject results that do not match figures entered at the polling unit, preventing discrepancies between accredited voters and reported outcomes. INEC officials say this feature strengthens transparency, reduces human error, and minimizes attempts at result manipulation.
According to the commission, the update is part of ongoing measures to ensure credible elections in the 2026 electoral cycle. Training for electoral officials on the new functionality has already commenced, and devices will be deployed in all polling units ahead of the elections.
Electoral observers have welcomed the move, noting that automated verification through BVAS helps maintain public confidence and accountability in the voting process.
