The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a deadline giving the Federal Government until 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, to address critical welfare and workplace demands or face a total, comprehensive, and indefinite nationwide strike. The resolution was reached in a communiqué signed by NARD President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, Secretary-General Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Publicity Secretary Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim following the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Gombe State.
Key demands outlined by the association include the immediate settlement of the outstanding 25/35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) upward review arrears, 19 months of unpaid professional allowance arrears, promotion arrears, and unresolved salary arrears owed to doctors in federal health institutions. NARD also called for an end to delayed salary payments and onboarding bottlenecks affecting house officers, alongside the accelerated signing and implementation of the Medical and Health Workers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.
In addition to financial grievances, the association raised alarm over the rising wave of physical attacks, harassment, and intimidation against doctors on duty, describing the trend as a grave threat to the country’s healthcare system. NARD urged the Federal Government to establish a National Healthcare Workers Assault Prevention and Response Protocol and enact federal legislation to criminalise assaults against healthcare personnel.
