A Flashlight On The Underrated Independence Being Enjoyed By The Town Unions In Anambra State

The independence of town unions in Governor Soludo’s administration is an underrated game-changer for Anambra State. For years, the leadership of these unions was plagued by illegitimacy, with communities more focused on securing Agu-Awka certificates than choosing effective Presidents General. This led to internal conflicts, cult wars, and a decline in community development.

In the past, town union elections were often a sham, with results declared without any genuine electoral process in most cases. Community leaders prioritized outmaneuvering their opponents with financial might at Agu-Awka, rather than presenting compelling manifestos. Consequently, many elected Presidents General struggled to unite their towns, leading to widespread disillusionment and decreased participation in local governance.

However, under Governor Soludo’s leadership, through the ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, headed by Mr Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne, town unions have gained unprecedented autonomy, enabling them to drive local development initiatives and address specific community needs. This approach has fostered a sense of ownership and accountability among community leaders, contributing significantly to the state’s progress.

Worthy of Applause is that Town unions now have control over local decision-making processes and can prioritize community needs and allocate resources effectively, deliberately upholding democratic principles in what Mr Governor sees as the fourth tier government in this part of the country.

The Soludo administration’s commitment to grassroots democracy is evident in the successful conduct of over 134 town union elections, with six traditional rulers receiving recognition certificates. This newfound independence has also led to the election of opposition party members as town union presidents, a previously unthinkable feat.

Governor Soludo’s vision for Anambra State is one of inclusive governance, where community leaders are empowered to drive development and promote peace.

Now, the serenity in Anambra State Town Unions is ringing it’s own bell, and in the voice of Chimaroke Nnamani Supporters, saying; “Ochichi kakwa mma na onye odoro Anya”
