The African Action Congress (AAC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has strongly criticized the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over his controversial directive banning staff of the FCT Administration from using mobile phones during office hours.
In a statement signed by Agena Robert Ande, Chairman of AAC FCT, and Salako Kayode, Secretary, the party described Wike’s order as “draconian,” “egregious,” and “a gross affront to democracy,” calling it a stark manifestation of authoritarianism.
“The African Action Congress (AAC) FCT Chapter is appalled by the draconian directive issued by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, imposing a blanket ban on the use of mobile phones by staff of the FCT Administration,” the statement read.
According to the party, the move attempts to muzzle public servants and stifle their right to communicate, showing contempt for the Nigerian civil service and a desire to “reduce FCT workers to servitude.”
“We unequivocally condemn this blatant attempt to reduce FCT workers to servitude, stripping them of their basic human rights and dignity. The notion that public servants can be treated as bonded laborers, forbidden from exercising their constitutional right to freedom of expression, is an anachronism that has no place in modern Nigeria,” the AAC said.
The party warned that Nigeria is not a banana republic, emphasizing that such policies have no place in a democratic society. It also accused the minister of arrogance and abuse of power, describing his actions as “a classic example of the arrogance and high-handedness that has become the hallmark of his tenure.”
“His propensity for insults, abuses, and false narratives against Nigerians is a matter of public record, and it is imperative that he is held accountable for his actions,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to socialist ideals and democratic values, the AAC urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubuto take immediate action, insisting that Wike’s continued stay in office poses a threat to the very fabric of democracy.
“As a socialist party committed to the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, we demand that President Tinubu takes immediate action to sack Wike from office,” the party said.
The AAC concluded by vowing to mobilize public outrage and resist any attempts to suppress civil servants’ rights or silence dissent in the FCT Administration.
“Nigeria is not a banana republic, and we will not stand idly by while our democratic values are trampled upon. We call on all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in condemning Wike’s actions and demanding accountability from this government,” the statement concluded.
