Abandoned buildings | FCTA reminds land owners of its 2-year ultimatum

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a firm reminder to landowners in Abuja: develop your allocated land within two years or face revocation.

Mr. Obinna Nkwocha, Acting Director of the Department of Monitoring and Inspection, delivered the warning on Wednesday during an inspection of abandoned buildings in Maitama, Central Area, and Jabi.

This comes as part of the FCT’s ongoing land reform initiative, which aims to reclaim undeveloped plots and address the growing security concerns linked to abandoned structures.

“Abandoned buildings have become safe havens for criminals and pose significant risks, including structural collapse due to neglect,” Nkwocha said.

He emphasized that the two-year ultimatum, as contained in the Building Plan Approval, is not just a policy formality but an enforceable regulation. Developers with approved plans were advised to return to their sites immediately to avoid sanctions.

Nkwocha attributed the delay in construction on many plots to poor financial planning and lack of due diligence, which often lead to litigation and stalled development.

He urged residents to play an active role in securing their communities by reporting abandoned properties that could endanger public safety.

The director also commended the ongoing infrastructure drive under FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, calling on developers and residents to support the administration’s vision for a more secure and developed capital city.
