The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu for failing to appoint ambassadors more than a year into his administration, warning that the prolonged delay is damaging Nigeria’s global reputation and diplomatic relations.
In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, the ADC expressed concern that the absence of official envoys in key countries is weakening Nigeria’s voice on the international stage and limiting opportunities for foreign investment, trade, and bilateral cooperation.
“President Tinubu’s inaction on ambassadorial appointments is not just an administrative oversight; it is a diplomatic failure,” Ajadi said. “Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy, should not be operating without formal representation in major world capitals. This sends the wrong message to our partners and undermines our national interest.”
Since the recall of ambassadors appointed by the previous administration in 2023, many Nigerian embassies and high commissions have been functioning without substantive heads, relying on lower-ranking officials to manage affairs.
Diplomatic experts have also raised concerns that the vacuum is affecting consular services and the country’s ability to respond effectively to international developments.
The ADC urged President Tinubu to act swiftly by nominating qualified diplomats and professionals to these critical roles, saying it is vital for restoring Nigeria’s image and influence abroad.
“Time is of the essence. Nigeria must not be seen as absent or silent in global affairs,” the statement concluded.
The Presidency has yet to respond to the criticism.
