Adeyanju: Majority of Opposition Figures Have Joined APC Ahead of 2027

Abuja, Nigeria — Human rights activist and political commentator Deji Adeyanju has lamented the current state of Nigeria’s political opposition, saying that most opposition politicians have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Adeyanju expressed concern that the collapse of opposition strength poses a serious threat to democracy, as it leaves citizens with fewer alternatives and weakens accountability in governance.

“Most opposition politicians have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Adeyanju said. “They have abandoned the ideals they once claimed to stand for, and now it’s all about personal gain, not public service.”

He accused many politicians of lacking ideology or conviction, switching parties purely for political survival and access to state power.

“When there’s no strong opposition, the ruling party becomes too comfortable, and that’s dangerous for democracy,” he warned.

Adeyanju called on Nigerians to demand stronger leadership and principled politics, emphasizing that democracy thrives only when there is credible opposition to keep those in power in check.

“We must begin to hold our politicians accountable. You can’t keep crossing from one party to another just to stay relevant — it shows a lack of vision,” he added.

Analysts agree that Adeyanju’s remarks reflect a growing public sentiment that Nigeria’s opposition parties have become weak and fragmented, especially amid the wave of defections to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
