Human rights advocate and legal practitioner Deji Adeyanju has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to apply the same level of military resolve used to help thwart the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin to the fight against terrorism and armed violence within Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyanju commended President Tinubu and the Nigerian Armed Forces for what he described as a decisive and commendable intervention that contributed to preventing coup plotters from overthrowing Benin’s democratically elected government.
He noted that Nigeria’s rapid military response—reportedly involving Air Force fighter jets and coordinated ground operations—showcased the nation’s capability to defend democratic institutions beyond its borders. Adeyanju stressed, however, that this capability must now be refocused inward.
“This is truly a proud moment for me as a Nigerian who loves democracy and understands the dangers of military rule,” Adeyanju said. “Let this stand as a clear signal to all who seek to undermine democracy in the Sahel that their days are numbered.”

The activist cautioned that the achievement in Benin would carry little weight if Nigeria fails to confront the terrorism, banditry, and violent extremism that continue to threaten communities across the country.
“The same might displayed in Benin should be applied with even greater resolve to crush the terrorist groups operating within our borders, so that Nigeria can truly lead by example,” he added.
Adeyanju emphasised that Nigeria’s leadership role in ECOWAS and its growing influence in the region can only be meaningful when citizens at home feel safe and protected from insurgents and criminal groups.
His remarks come amid increasing public concern over persistent attacks across the North-West, North-East, and North-Central regions, despite long-running military operations and repeated government assurances of improved security.
He urged President Tinubu to prioritise domestic security with the same urgency demonstrated during the Benin intervention, insisting that Nigerians deserve not only the protection of democracy abroad but also the restoration of peace and safety at home.
