On January 18, 2025, the Anambra State Government launched “Operation Udo Ga-Achi” in response to escalating criminal activity in the state, including kidnappings and murders. This initiative also saw the creation of “Agunechemba,” a grassroots security outfit aimed at curbing local crime.
The operation followed months of criticism regarding the state government’s inadequate response to the growing insecurity, which had forced many residents to flee their communities. Despite the official launch, challenges remain. Agunechemba personnel are still being assembled in some areas, and operational vehicles are insufficient. While the government has promised more vehicles, the delay in deployment has hindered the immediate impact of the operation.
The government is urged to address these delays and ensure that communities are fully prepared. If these issues persist, they could embolden criminals and undermine public confidence in the operation. Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the potential misuse of Agunechemba for political witch-hunting or human rights abuses. The government is advised to ensure that the outfit remains professional and neutral to safeguard its integrity.
As the operation progresses, it is hoped that the full implementation will bring lasting peace to Anambra State, making “Udo Ga-Achi” more than just a name.
