The Zamfara State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jamil Jibo Magayaki, has resigned from the party and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing recent political developments in the state.

Mr Magayaki announced his decision in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday.

In the statement, Mr Magayaki said the current political realities influenced the move in Zamfara State.

“I, Dr Jamil Jibo Magayaki, the Zamfara State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, hereby announce my formal defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress,” he said.

“My decision to join the APC is based on the current political reality in Zamfara State, which demands alignment with a platform better positioned to address the challenges of security, development and governance for the benefit of our people.”

Mr Magayaki’s move comes days after the Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, also left the PDP to join the APC.

Governor Lawal announced his defection on Monday after consultations with political stakeholders, party leaders and supporters across the state.

Mr Lawal said the decision was driven by internal crises within the PDP and the need for broader political cooperation to address security and development challenges in the state.

Wave of Political Realignments

The latest defection highlights growing political realignments in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In recent months, the PDP in the state has witnessed several defections, including members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly and thousands of party supporters who moved to the APC.

Observers say the shifting alliances could reshape the state’s political landscape as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
