The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man identified as David Effiong for allegedly causing a public disturbance while dressed in full masquerade attire, in defiance of the state government’s ban on masquerade activities.
Effiong was apprehended on Tuesday following reports from residents who alleged that the masquerader was creating a nuisance and destroying property within the community.
Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, said the suspect will be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations.
The development comes as security operatives intensify enforcement of Governor Pastor Umo Eno’s statewide ban on masquerade displays. The ban was issued in response to increasing complaints of intimidation, violent confrontations, and property damage linked to masqueraders across the state.
Police authorities noted that despite repeated warnings, many masqueraders have continued to pose a threat to public peace, prompting a renewed crackdown.
According to the Command, investigations into Effiong’s alleged misconduct are ongoing, and he will be arraigned once the process is completed.
