Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has apologised to supporters after his side suffered a humiliating League Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby Town.
United clawed back from 2-0 down at Blundell Park, with Harry Maguire’s 89th-minute header forcing penalties. But after a marathon shootout ended 12–11, Bryan Mbeumo struck the bar with United’s final kick, sealing Grimsby’s famous win.
The hosts, dominant for long spells, outfought and outplayed their Premier League visitors, leaving Amorim to admit his side lacked urgency and fight.
“Everything. The way we started, we were not even here,” the Portuguese said. “Everything is so important in this club. We should do so much better. I just have to say sorry to our fans.”
Under mounting pressure since taking over last season, Amorim hinted at deeper problems within the squad. “The players spoke really loud today what they want,” he said, adding: “Doesn’t matter that we lost on penalties. Football was fair today. The best team won.”
United’s only realistic hopes of silverware this season now rest in the FA Cup, with Amorim admitting the international break would be a period for reflection.
“It’s not about Andre [Onana]. With all due respect, this is a fourth-division team. It’s not the goalkeeper. It’s more than that,” he said, refusing to blame his goalkeeper despite errors leading to both Grimsby goals.
Amorim acknowledged expectations at Old Trafford remain high but warned the club’s issues cannot be solved overnight. “You cannot change everything in one summer. But you need to win games. You need to avoid this kind of performance. I think this is a little bit the limit.”
