The Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Chukwuma Okoye, has called for increased intervention to combat the worsening erosion crisis in the state. Okoye, who represents Awka South Constituency Two, made the call during a visit to a gully erosion site in Ezimezi, Amawbia, as part of efforts to address environmental sustainability challenges.
During the visit, Hon. Okoye emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further damage, urging residents to be conscious of their environmental practices to avoid exacerbating the problem. He stressed that erosion poses a serious threat to lives, property, and infrastructure in the state, making urgent intervention necessary.
Also present at the site was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra State Erosion Watershed and Climate Change Agency, Professor Philip Phil-Eze. He assured that the agency would conduct a detailed survey of the affected area within the week to facilitate prompt commencement of remedial work.
Professor Phil-Eze noted that the state government remains committed to tackling environmental degradation and ensuring a sustainable future for Anambra residents. The visit, he said, was a demonstration of the government’s resolve to address the challenges posed by erosion and other climate-related issues.
Anambra State is one of the most erosion-prone states in Nigeria, with several communities experiencing devastating gully formations that threaten livelihoods and displace residents. The call for swift intervention aligns with the state government’s broader environmental protection and infrastructure sustainability efforts.
