Anambra Executive Council Decries Human Activities Contributing to Erosion, Awards Contracts for Critical Infrastructure Development/Vop

At the first meeting of the year held on February 3, 2025, the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) expressed concern over human activities exacerbating stormwater and gully erosion across the state. The council condemned the construction of structures on waterways’ right-of-way without state government approval, highlighting that such buildings violate the Land Use Act, which gives the state government authority over physical planning. The council called on communities to stop sand excavations in unauthorized areas, noting that these activities have contributed significantly to the environmental degradation threatening various communities.

In addition to environmental concerns, the council emphasized the importance of maintaining physical fitness and encouraged members to actively engage in fitness exercises.

Contract Approvals

ANSEC approved several key infrastructure projects aimed at improving the state’s facilities and addressing ongoing challenges. Among the approved contracts was the construction of a Protocol Lounge at Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri, Anambra State. Gill Associates Ltd. was awarded the N144 million contract, with completion set for seven weeks.

Additionally, a sum of N380,600,669.48 was approved for the rehabilitation of all internal roads at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) in Amaku, Awka, which will feature a full asphaltic overlay.

The council also approved the award of a N140 million contract to Damtech Nig. Ltd. to create a master plan for managing the Aguata Storm Water Project, which is expected to be completed in three months.

Furthermore, Crystal Dove Construction Company Ltd. was awarded a contract worth N84,255,318.00 to complete works at the Specialist Hospital in Fegge, Onitsha South LGA.

These projects reflect the state government’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and addressing environmental challenges.
