Anambra Government Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures in Onitsha/Vop

The Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB) has commenced the demolition of illegal structures and shanties in Onitsha as part of efforts to enhance environmental safety and security.

The exercise, led by the Chairman of the Board, Barrister Chike Maduekwe, is aimed at enforcing compliance with building regulations across the state. Speaking on the initiative, Barrister Maduekwe stressed the dangers posed by unauthorized constructions, warning that such structures threaten public safety and security.

Among the areas affected are shanties near public buildings in Nkisi and an illegal construction on a canal in the Omogba area of Onitsha. According to Maduekwe, these locations have been linked to security concerns, including reports of criminal activities such as assaults and theft.

The demolition follows a three-month grace period during which developers were required to present proof of building approvals. With the deadline now expired, enforcement has begun in full force.

“This exercise will be total and continuous because the lives of ndị Anambra cannot be jeopardized, regardless of the status of the offenders,” Maduekwe stated.

He further revealed that a particular construction site on a canal had become a hotspot for criminal activities, despite previous warnings to the developers. The government, he assured, would continue to monitor the situation and take necessary actions against violations.

Maduekwe reiterated the importance of obtaining proper building permits and warned that any structure erected without approval would be demolished.
