The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Anambra State, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and halt the proposed increase in Automated Teller Machine (ATM) charges set to take effect on March 1. He described the move as an additional burden on Nigerians already struggling with economic hardships.
Speaking to the ABS on the development, Dr. Odogwu expressed deep concern over the frequent rise in financial charges under the Tinubu administration. He attributed the worsening economic situation to the inefficiency of certain government appointees, whom he accused of being indifferent to the plight of the masses. He urged the president to replace them with more competent individuals who are committed to economic recovery and national development.
Dr. Odogwu further warned that implementing the new ATM charges would likely drive up the cost of goods and services, worsening inflation. He urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reconsider the decision and instead focus on policies that would provide relief to Nigerians and stabilize the nation’s fragile economy.
The proposed increase has sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for urgent measures to ease financial pressures rather than introduce additional costs for everyday banking transactions.
