The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects for orchestrating a fake kidnapping scheme aimed at extorting money from the victim’s own family.
The suspects, identified as Chinecherem Okonkwo, a female student of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), and Chinecherem Aronu, allegedly staged the abduction and demanded a ransom of ₦10 million using a disguised voice.
According to a statement released on Monday by police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad arrested the duo at a lodge located around UNIZIK Temporary Site in Awka, following intelligence led investigations.
The police said the two suspects are currently in custody and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the criminal conspiracy.
SP Ikenga also warned individuals against exploiting security agencies through false information, noting that such acts will be met with the full weight of the law.
