Anglican Church Questions Legitimacy of Archbishop of Wales’ Election

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has publicly rejected the election of Bishop Cherry Vann as the Archbishop of Wales, citing her lifestyle and theological stance as a deviation from biblical and Anglican orthodoxy.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Archbishop and Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, expressed strong disapproval of the July 3 election, describing it as part of a broader trend of theological drift within the Church in Wales.

According to Archbishop Ndukuba, Bishop Vann’s elevation reflects “a further abandonment of the faith once delivered to the saints” and poses a threat to the spiritual integrity of the Anglican Communion.

“The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) condemns, unequivocally rejects and will not recognise the election of Vann as Archbishop of Wales,” the statement read.
“We will strive to uphold the authority of the Scriptures, our historic creeds, evangelism, and holy Christian living.”

He reiterated the Church’s firm commitment to biblical authority and called upon faithful Anglicans to denounce what he described as doctrinal compromise, while advocating for stronger alignment with conservative Anglican bodies such as the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).

The Church of Nigeria further warned of the spiritual consequences of continued compromise by Anglican provinces in the West, urging faithful Christians to resist what it termed “rebels in our midst.”

“We call upon faithful Christians of the Anglican fold to denounce, reject, condemn and expel the rebels in our midst, while we realign ourselves with Anglican remnants scattered in troubled dioceses all over the world,” Ndukuba said.

The Church also called for continued prayers for the Church in Wales, expressing concern that the Church of Englandcould soon follow a similar path unless there is repentance and a return to biblical standards.

“We should hold them in our prayers with a clear message that hope lies only in true repentance and godliness,” the statement added.
“Otherwise, the church will lose complete relevance in the divine scheme for the people of Wales, and the leaders in compromise shall not be spared in the time of judgment.”
