Political tension is rising across Nigeria as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and major opposition parties clash over the outcomes of recent by-elections held in 12 states across the country.
The by-elections, which were conducted to fill vacant seats in both state and federal legislatures, have sparked strong reactions from different political camps. While the APC claims victory in most of the contested areas, opposition parties—including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party—are rejecting the results in several states, alleging vote rigging, voter intimidation, and manipulation by electoral officers.
In Abia, Kogi, Rivers, and Plateau, opposition leaders have called for investigations into what they describe as “widespread irregularities,” including late arrival of election materials and disruption of voting in some polling units.
However, the APC has denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the elections were free and fair. Speaking from Abuja, an APC spokesperson said, “The people have spoken, and the results reflect the will of the voters. We urge opposition parties to respect the democratic process.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acknowledged receiving complaints and said it is reviewing reports from election observers and officials. INEC has urged all parties to remain calm and to use legal means to resolve disputes.
Analysts say the growing tension shows that Nigeria’s democratic institutions still face serious challenges. For many voters, the by-elections were a chance to express their hopes for better leadership and service delivery. But when results are disputed, it can reduce public trust in the electoral system.
Civic groups are calling on INEC to improve transparency, ensure better training for officials, and guarantee the safety of voters in future elections.
As legal battles loom, Nigerians are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds, hoping for a peaceful resolution that strengthens—not weakens—democracy.
