Army Probes Soldiers’ Alleged Misconduct in Enugu

The Nigerian Army has launched a probe into serious allegations against some of its personnel in Enugu, convening a General Court Martial (GCM.

On February 18, 2025, five officers and 20 soldiers appeared before the GCM over charges including murder, defilement, manslaughter, extortion, and assault on civilians.

The tribunal, presided over by Brig.-Gen. Buhari Sadisu, was set up under the directive of Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division.

Military authorities stressed that the accused remain presumed innocent until proven guilty and assured the public of a fair trial.

This is not the first time soldiers in Enugu have faced such proceedings. In October 2023, 25 soldiers and one officer were court-martialed over various offenses, prompting public debate and allegations of ethnic bias—claims the Army later dismissed, insisting it is a national, non-ethnic institution.

in June 2022, six soldiers of the 82 Division were tried for acts of indiscipline, with the then GOC, Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, reiterating that court martials are key to maintaining discipline within the ranks.

The Army says the latest probe underscores its commitment to accountability and professional conduct, particularly in cases involving alleged abuse of civilians.
