The former vice president Atiku Abubakar has voiced concerns over the increasing influence of state governments in the appointment and enthronement of traditional rulers.

In a statement posted on his social media handles, Atiku reiterated the importance of safeguarding traditional institutions from arbitrary state interference, noting their critical role in governance and community stability.

He acknowledged that although traditional rulership falls under the jurisdiction of state governments, it is essential to recognize that they are integral components of the broader governance framework.

He argued that instability in the ascension process of traditional rulers could disrupt peace and order, thereby affecting the overall well-being of communities.

He therefore appealed to state governors to accord the necessary respect to the offices of traditional institutions as the customs that traditional rulers represent is the totality of our heritage as a people.
