Banks Encouraged to Employ Sign Language Interpreters by Foundation

A non-governmental organisation, Sharing Education and Learning for Life (SELL), has called on Nigerian banks to employ sign language interpreters to improve service delivery and promote inclusivity for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

The Programme Manager of SELL, Mr. Benji Benjamin, made the appeal during a one-day sensitisation exercise held in Bauchi on Wednesday. The event focused on policy engagement, compliance, and raising awareness about inclusive services for PWDs.

Benjamin emphasized that accessible banking is essential, particularly for the deaf community. He noted that such initiatives are part of broader efforts to make both public and private infrastructure more inclusive.

“By the end of this session, we expect everyone here to have a clearer idea of how to contribute to making our shared spaces more inclusive,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Mainas Ayuba from the Bauchi State Network of Disability Forum highlighted the challenges faced by PWDs in conventional banking. He shared an example of a hearing-impaired customer who struggled to resolve an account issue due to the absence of sign language support.

“Apart from not resolving his issue, he was sometimes ignored. Many PWDs now prefer online banking because physical branches do not treat them with the dignity and accessibility they deserve,” Ayuba said.

He also called on educational institutions to accommodate students who use wheelchairs, allowing them to use their mobility devices during lectures and exams rather than being forced into standard desks.

Mr. Haruna Pali, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, expressed concern about ongoing marginalisation and lack of inclusivity in various sectors.

In response, Mr. Morris Choji, representing Ecobank Nigeria Limited (Bauchi branch), pledged to relay the concerns to the upcoming bankers’ committee meeting.

Participants also urged the full enforcement of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

The event brought together representatives from banks, the Bauchi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.
