Barr. Darlington Demands Answers on Tafa Balogun’s Exit from Police Office

Legal practitioner and public affairs analyst, Barrister Darlington, has questioned the circumstances surrounding the dramatic exit of former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, from office, describing it as one of Nigeria’s most politically charged scandals that still raises unanswered questions.

Speaking during a live discussion on VOP TV, Barr. Darlington asked rhetorically:

“Who was responsible for disgracing former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, out of office?”

The lawyer said the question remains crucial in understanding how political power is used in Nigeria, particularly when high-ranking officials suddenly fall from grace under controversial circumstances.

According to him, the former police boss’s downfall reflected not just an internal issue of corruption allegations but also a calculated political takedown engineered by interests that may have felt threatened by his influence and connections within the system.[irp]

“It’s not always about corruption or misconduct. Sometimes, it’s about who controls the levers of power. Nigerians must ask: what really happened behind the scenes?” Barr. Darlington added.

He explained that Tafa Balogun’s case symbolizes the complex relationship between law enforcement, politics, and loyalty in Nigeria, noting that those who rise through the ranks often become victims of the same system that elevated them.

Barr. Darlington also argued that without transparency and accountability in how such high-profile dismissals are handled, Nigerians would continue to witness similar episodes where powerful figures are publicly humiliated, only for the truth to remain buried for years.

“We cannot build strong institutions when justice and discipline are selective,” he said. “Tafa Balogun’s disgrace was not just a personal tragedy — it was a lesson about how power is used and abused in Nigeria.”

He called on historians, journalists, and legal experts to revisit the episode with objectivity, insisting that the truth about what transpired must be told for the sake of institutional integrity.[irp]

The former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, was appointed in 2002 but was forced to resign in 2005 following allegations of corruption and abuse of office. His arrest and public humiliation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) shocked the nation and marked a defining moment in Nigeria’s anti-corruption history.
