On this edition of Inside Analysis, legal and political affairs analyst Barrister Darlington has cautioned that Nigeria’s electoral reform conversation must go beyond the routine campaign for voter registration, stressing that the integrity of the entire voting process remains the real issue.
“The matter goes beyond merely obtaining a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC). The real concern is whether the votes of Nigerians will truly count,” he said.[irp]
According to Barrister Darlington, genuine voter registration must reflect reality, not manipulation or inflated figures designed to serve political interests.
“Voter registration must reflect reality — you cannot just conjure or fabricate registrations,” he warned.
He emphasized that while mobilizing citizens to register is important, the credibility of INEC’s voter data, transmission process, and collation system will ultimately determine whether democracy in Nigeria earns or loses public trust.[irp]
Barrister Darlington concluded that Nigeria’s democratic future depends not only on civic participation but on transparency, accountability, and the sanctity of the ballot — principles that must not be compromised at any level.
