Barr. Darlington: Politicians Take the Lion’s Share, Yet Never Go on Strike

Abuja — Legal practitioner and public affairs analyst, Barrister Darlington, has criticized Nigerian political office holders for their insensitivity to the economic hardship faced by citizens, questioning when they would ever “go on strike” in solidarity with the people.

Speaking during a live political discussion, Darlington lamented that while workers across various sectors often embark on strikes to demand fair wages and better conditions, political leaders — who take what he described as “the lion’s share” of the nation’s resources — remain unaffected and detached.

“When are these political office holders going on their own strike? Because they take the lion’s share,” he asked pointedly.

Darlington noted that the disparity between the lavish lifestyle of elected officials and the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians reflects deep inequality in governance.

He further urged leaders to show moral responsibility by cutting down on wasteful spending and redirecting resources toward essential public services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“Leadership is about sacrifice, not self-enrichment,” he added. “If the people who contribute the least to national productivity keep earning the most, then something is fundamentally wrong.”
