Abuja — Legal practitioner and political analyst, Barrister Elvis Elimihele, has questioned the ideological foundations of Nigeria’s political parties, describing the growing wave of defections as evidence that many politicians are driven by personal interest rather than principle.
Speaking during a political discourse, Elimihele expressed frustration over the rate at which Nigerian politicians switch allegiances without clear ideological differences between parties.
“What is the ideology of all the political parties in Nigeria?” he asked. “This defection thing is getting too much. When someone starts a meeting with a particular party, before he even closes, he’s with another.”
He argued that the absence of defined party philosophies has turned Nigeria’s political system into a marketplace of convenience, where politicians prioritize ambition over integrity.
Elimihele called for stronger party structures, value-based leadership, and civic education to help citizens distinguish genuine public servants from political opportunists.
“Until political parties are built on ideology, not personalities, Nigeria’s democracy will keep struggling to mature,” he warned.
