The Yobe State Government has announced a donation of N20 million to support victims of a recent boat accident in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area. The announcement was made by Deputy Governor Alhaji Idi Gubana during a condolence visit to the Nguru Emirate Council and affected families on Tuesday.
At least 29 people have been confirmed dead, while 14 others remain missing following the accident on January 4. The boat, carrying approximately 52 passengers—including farmers and traders—was traveling from Adiyani town in Guri LGA, Jigawa State, to Garbi town in Nguru LGA when it capsized in the River Yobe. The State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) has confirmed the tragic losses.
Deputy Governor Gubana directed that the donated funds be distributed among the injured passengers and families of the deceased, while praying for the comfort and fortitude of those affected. According to Hussaini Mai-Sule, his press secretary, Gubana emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing future accidents through safety awareness programs and infrastructural support.

The government has tasked YOSEMA with training and sensitizing canoe operators on safety measures. Gubana also pledged to procure modern boats and life jackets to improve water transportation in the region and warned operators against overloading, identifying it as a primary cause of boat accidents in the state.
YOSEMA Executive Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Goje, reported that search and rescue operations are ongoing under the supervision of local divers. He confirmed that of the 52 passengers, 15 were rescued and eight remain missing, and he emphasized that the agency is committed to enhancing river safety and emergency preparedness across Yobe State.
