In a disturbing display of political discord, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly and a local government chairman were caught on video exchanging blows in public over what witnesses described as a lingering political disagreement.
The altercation, which took place on a busy street in one of the state’s urban centres, drew the attention of stunned onlookers who attempted to separate the two men. The confrontation, which has since gone viral on social media, has sparked outrage and calls for disciplinary action from the public and civil society organisations. According to eyewitnesses, the clash was the result of weeks of tension between the two political figures, believed to be from the same ruling par
ty. Their disagreement allegedly stemmed from issues relating to resource allocation, political control at the grassroots level, and influence over local party structures.
โI was shocked,โ said a trader who witnessed the fight. โThese are people we elected to represent us and solve our problems, but instead, theyโre out here behaving like street fighters.โ
While the names of the individuals involved are being withheld pending official confirmation, a source within the local government council disclosed that there had been a previous attempt to mediate between the two parties, but the talks had broken down.
โBoth men have been trying to outmaneuver each other politically, and this tension has been building up. It was only a matter of time before it exploded,โ the source added.
The Benue State House of Assembly has yet to release an official statement, but a senior staff member who spoke on condition of anonymity condemned the incident, calling it “a disgrace to the institution of governance.”
Civil rights groups have also reacted sharply. The Benue Civil Society Forum issued a statement condemning the altercation, describing it as โan embarrassment to democracy and a betrayal of the trust of the people.โ
โThe altercation between the lawmaker and the council chairman is a reflection of a deeper rot in the political culture of impunity, where egos are allowed to override the sanctity of public office,โ the statement read.
Meanwhile, the state police command has confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the matter. โWe are reviewing footage and eyewitness reports to determine the full circumstances behind the incident,โ a police spokesperson said. โThose found guilty of assault or public disturbance will be held accountable, regardless of their political status.โ
Political analysts have warned that such incidents, if not addressed, could erode public trust in government institutions.
โThis is not just about two individuals,โ said Dr. Philip Ikya, a political science lecturer at Benue State University. โIt is about the image of leadership in Nigeria. When elected officials resolve disputes with violence, they send a dangerous message to citizens, especially the youth.โ
As the dust settles on the incident, many residents of Benue are left questioning the maturity and readiness of their leaders to steer the state through its many challenges. With economic hardship, insecurity, and youth unemployment still looming large, observers say the state needs leadership grounded in dialogue and serviceโnot public brawls.
