Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect.
The development, disclosed in a press statement on Sunday, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the statement, Mr Kwankwaso said his decision was driven by the need for a strategic political realignment in response to evolving national dynamics.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.
Reason for exit
The former governor expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve as its National Leader and presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections.
He described his exit as a difficult decision but necessary in light of current political realities.
According to him, Nigeria’s political trajectory requires alignment with a platform that offers a stronger opportunity to pursue meaningful national change.
Political implications
Kwankwaso’s resignation is expected to trigger fresh political alignments and recalibrations among opposition parties as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Observers say the move could reshape alliances and influence the balance of power within Nigeria’s opposition bloc.
The announcement adds to growing political activity across the country, with key actors repositioning in anticipation of the next electoral cycle.
