Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced plans to close the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri within the coming weeks. The governor revealed this during an early morning visit to the camp on Monday.
The closure is part of Zulum’s administration’s ongoing initiative to close all formal IDP camps in Maiduguri and surrounding areas. Muna, which was established during the peak of the state’s humanitarian crisis, currently houses approximately 10,000 displaced persons.
Governor Zulum highlighted that about 75 percent of the camp’s residents have already been resettled. He assured the remaining residents that the government would offer support to help improve their livelihoods as they prepare to return to their communities.
He emphasized that the camp’s closure represents a key milestone in the state’s shift from emergency humanitarian efforts to long-term recovery and resettlement.
During his first term, Zulum had committed to closing all IDP camps in Maiduguri, and he has largely fulfilled this promise, having already shut down more than 12 camps.
