Breaking | U.S. Cardina Kevin Farrell Takes Over as Interim Head of Vatican After Pope Francis’ Death

Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, the Vatican has entered a period known as sede vacate—a time when the papal seat is vacant. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, an Irish-born American, has taken on the role of Camerlengo, temporarily overseeing the administration of the Vatican until a new pope is elected.

As Camerlengo, Farrell is responsible for confirming the Pope’s death, securing the papal residence, and organizing the upcoming conclave. A naturalized U.S. citizen and former Bishop of Dallas, he has served in various key Vatican roles since 2019.

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 at his Vatican residence from complications related to a stroke and heart failure. His funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, in St. Peter’s Square, followed by a traditional nine-day mourning period. The conclave to elect his successor is expected to begin on May 5.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, though too old to vote, will preside over the conclave as Dean of the College of Cardinals. Eligible cardinal electors under the age of 80 will participate in the election of the next pope.

Pope Francis, the first Jesuit and Latin American pope, was widely known for his focus on social justice, climate action, and reform within the Church. Tributes have poured in from around the world, honoring his legacy and global impact.
