Buhari Worked to Restore Nigeria’s Integrity and Discipline – Labour Party

The Labour Party has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot who worked tirelessly to restore integrity, discipline, and order to Nigeria’s governance.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure, said Buhari’s leadership, both as a military head of state and a democratically elected president, was marked by a determined effort to sanitize Nigeria’s political and moral landscape.

“When in December 1983, General Buhari, as a young military officer, assumed leadership as Head of State, he worked so hard to restore sanity and return Nigeria to a path of integrity, discipline, and incorruption,” Abure stated. “He fought against decay and moral impunity in the political system.”

Reflecting on Buhari’s return to power as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023, Abure said the former leader brought “much relief and sanity” to millions of Nigerians through what he described as a humane and sincere approach to governance.

He further described Buhari as a committed patriot and statesman who had a genuine desire to see Nigeria’s democratic institutions strengthened.

“He wanted a democracy that worked. It was under his administration that the Electoral Act was passed, a significant move aimed at deepening Nigeria’s democratic processes,” Abure said.

He lauded the former president’s legacy, noting his courage, discipline, and honesty as key leadership traits that earned him respect across the political spectrum.

“Buhari was a committed, courageous, disciplined, and honest leader who left a legacy of service,” he said. “We hope he will be remembered for the laudable and courageous policies he saw through.”

Abure noted that the Labour Party stands in solidarity with Nigerians and world leaders in mourning the loss of a man whose impact on the country’s governance and political identity was far-reaching.

“We in the Labour Party join millions of Nigerians and world leaders across the globe to mourn the passing of this great man,” he said.

He extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family and the nation, offering prayers for divine mercy and eternal rest.

“My deepest condolences to his immediate family, loved ones, and all Nigerians. I pray that Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgives his shortcomings, accepts his deeds, and grants him Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Voice of the People (VOP) reports that former President Buhari died on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old.
