Businessman in Court for Allegedly Issuing Death Threat Against Nephew

A 56-year-old businessman, Mike Ogu, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Life Camp Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly threatening to kill his nephew.

Ogu, who resides in Efab Estate, Life Camp, was charged by the police with criminal intimidation.

The prosecution counsel, Mrs. Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that on August 25, the complainant, Samuel of Mountain of Fire, Dutse, Abuja, who is the defendant’s nephew, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station.

Nwachukwu alleged that on August 24, the defendant dishonestly sent a WhatsApp voice note to Samuel, threatening to kill him. She added that Ogu also insulted the complainant for demanding the return of his international passport.

According to her, Samuel and his friend, Gabriel, had entrusted their passports to the defendant to facilitate a trip to Japan. However, the complainant claimed the defendant delayed in processing the travel documents.

The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation and interrogation, the defendant made a confessional statement.

She said the offence contravenes Section 397 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Ramilatu Halilu granted Ogu bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties in like sum. She ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case until September 24 for further mention.
