The Confederation of African Football has appointed Samson Adamu as its acting secretary-general, marking a historic milestone for Nigeria in continental football administration.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, confirmed that Adamu replaces Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“His predecessor stepped down to contest the presidential election of his country’s football federation (FECOFA),” the statement noted.

The appointment makes Adamu the first Nigerian to occupy the position since CAF’s establishment over 70 years ago.

Background and experience

Before his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organising major continental competitions.

His elevation is seen as a recognition of his contributions to African football development and tournament management.

Appointment process

According to the statement, Adamu’s nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the congress during its meeting held on Sunday, 29 March, in Cairo.

The development is expected to strengthen further Nigeria’s presence and influence within African football administration.
