Cameroon’s Presidential Race Draws 81 Candidates in 2025 Election Bid

Yaoundé, Cameroon – July 22, 2025

Cameroon’s 2025 presidential election is already making headlines, with a record-breaking 81 candidates applying to run for the presidency.

The announcement came from the Constitutional Council, which is responsible for overseeing the election process. This is the highest number of presidential hopefuls the country has ever seen—and it’s got people talking.

For many Cameroonians, the high number of candidates shows a growing interest in democracy and a desire for change, especially as President Paul Biya has been in power since 1982—more than 40 years.

“People are tired of the same faces. They want to try something new,” said Jean-Claude, a 29-year-old student in Yaoundé.

Experts say that not all 81 candidates are likely to make it onto the final ballot. Many may not meet the strict rules, such as collecting enough signatures or paying the required fees. But the interest itself sends a strong message.

Experts say that not all 81 candidates are likely to make it onto the final ballot. Many may not meet the strict rules, such as collecting enough signatures or paying the required fees. But the interest itself sends a strong message.

“It shows people are ready to speak up and take part in the country’s future,” said Dr. Francine Abega, a political analyst based in Douala.

Still, not everyone is happy about the large number.

“Eighty-one is too much,” said Marie, a shopkeeper in Bafoussam. “It might confuse voters. We need leaders who are serious and united.”

What This Means for the Country

Having more candidates could be a sign that democracy is opening up, giving people more choices. But it also raises some concerns:

  • Will the election be free and fair?

  • Can the Electoral Commission handle such a large number of candidates?

  • Will voters be able to clearly choose the best leader among so many?

As the October election approaches, the big question remains: Can one of these new faces bring the real change many Cameroonians are hoping for?

For now, the country waits for the Constitutional Council to confirm which candidates will officially be on the ballot.
