CAN extends its congratulations to the Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended its congratulations to the Roman Catholic Church following the election of Pope Leo XIV.

In a statement issued on Friday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh expressed that this momentous event brings joy to Catholics around the world, and CAN stands in solidarity with them in celebration.

“The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a new era of renewal and hope for the Catholic Church,” Archbishop Okoh said. “We are confident that the new Pontiff will uphold the values of peace, justice, and inclusivity, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.”

He further prayed for Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate to be blessed with wisdom, good health, and the strength to guide God’s people on the righteous path.

“May God guide and empower him in his ministry,” the statement concluded.

According to NAN, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was elected as the 267th pope, adopting the name Pope Leo XIV. The announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, with Cardinal Dominique Mamberti proclaiming “Habemus Papam” to the cheering crowds in St. Peter’s Square.

At 69 years old, Pope Leo XIV becomes the first American pope in history. He was previously the Superior General of the Augustinians. He succeeds Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
