China has strongly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to introduce a new detention blacklist that targets Chinese officials and companies accused of human rights abuses.
In a statement on Thursday, Beijing said it “firmly opposes” the move, describing it as political interference and an attempt to undermine China’s sovereignty. The blacklist is expected to restrict the activities of certain Chinese individuals and organizations in the U.S., including access to visas, assets, and business dealings.
Trump, who is seeking another term in office, defended the policy, saying it was designed to hold China accountable for alleged human rights violations, especially regarding detention practices in Xinjiang.
Analysts note that the decision is likely to heighten tensions between Washington and Beijing, two of the world’s biggest economies, at a time when global trade and security already face significant pressure.
For ordinary people, experts warn the fallout could affect supply chains, increase the cost of some goods, and complicate U.S.–China relations that touch everything from technology to student visas.
The Chinese government urged Washington to reconsider, stressing that dialogue and cooperation, rather than sanctions, remain the best way to resolve differences.
