Christmas Festivities: Livestock Prices Ease as Markets Record Mixed Patronage.

As the Christmas season approaches, trading activities are picking up across major markets, particularly in the livestock sector, which traditionally experiences increased demand during the festive period.

Findings from a visit to the Amansea cattle and goat market in Anambra State indicate that the cost of livestock this year appears slightly lower compared to last Christmas. Prices vary depending on size, with large cows currently selling for between ₦1.8 million and ₦2 million, while medium-sized cattle are priced between ₦700,000 and ₦800,000.

The Chairman of the Ariwa community, Alhaji Gidado Sodiki, confirmed that traders are witnessing improved sales this season, noting that both cattle and goats are attracting buyers. According to him, smaller goats are available from about ₦80,000, while larger ones cost between ₦350,000 and ₦400,000.

At the Eke Awka market, poultry prices also vary based on type and size. A poultry dealer, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Nwafor, explained that old layers are currently sold for about ₦9,500, broiler chickens range from ₦10,000 to ₦12,000, while parent stock chickens attract prices between ₦20,000 and ₦25,000.

Mrs. Nwafor, however, noted that sales have been slower compared to the same period last year but expressed optimism that demand would rise as Christmas draws closer.

Market observers believe that purchasing activities are likely to increase in the coming days as households make final preparations for the festive celebrations.
