Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji, a former member of the House of Representatives and APC Senatorial Candidate, officially declared his candidacy for the 2025 Anambra State gubernatorial election on January 30, 2025, at the APC Secretariat in Awka. The event was attended by the Party’s State Executive Committee, led by Chief Basil Ejidike, the APC State Chairman.
In his declaration, Umeoji, a former ECOWAS Parliamentarian, confirmed his eligibility to contest under the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting his unwavering commitment to the party. He emphasized his dedication, stating, “I am APC through and through.”
Speaking before the Party’s SEC, Umeoji outlined his vision for Anambra, stressing that the selection of the APC’s gubernatorial candidate should be based on experience, proven competence, and the ability to meet the needs and aspirations of the people. He declared that he has the necessary experience and qualifications to lead the state toward peace and development.
Umeoji’s extensive experience spans various areas, showcasing his readiness for leadership:
Security: Umeoji highlighted his background in security, referencing his time on the Anambra State Vigilante Supervisory Committee (ASVSC) and as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). He emphasized the importance of the 1999 Constitution, which prioritizes the security and welfare of citizens, and assured that his expertise would ensure lasting peace in Anambra.
Governance and Administration: Umeoji’s leadership experience includes serving as the Executive Chairman of Aguata Local Government (2014-2017), as well as representing his constituents in the House of Representatives. He has also contributed to regional development through his role in the ECOWAS Parliament.
Health: Having worked with the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), Umeoji expressed confidence in his ability to improve the state’s health sector, particularly through strategic enhancements to healthcare facilities.
Infrastructure: With his experience as a member of the Anambra State Land Acquisition and Mediation Committee, Umeoji gained deep insights into the challenges and opportunities across Anambra’s communities, equipping him with the knowledge to address the state’s diverse infrastructural needs.
Revenue and Economic Development: Umeoji also emphasized his ability to effectively manage the state’s finances, citing his work with the ECOWAS Public Accounts Committee and the Anambra State Joint Account Committee. His goal is to ensure taxpayers’ funds are efficiently used for the people’s benefit.
Addressing the sensitive issue of zoning in Anambra, Umeoji acknowledged its emotional significance and explained that although zoning is not an official agreement, it is often respected by the people. He pointed out that 71% of Anambra residents support zoning, highlighting its importance in the state’s political dynamics.
In his concluding remarks, Umeoji expressed gratitude to the APC State Executive Committee for their support and reaffirmed his dedication to the party.
