“Civic Body Calls on President Tinubu to Discipline FCT Minister Wike”

Civil society organizations have called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and hold the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accountable following his controversial verbal altercation with a naval officer in Abuja.

The incident occurred during an inspection visit to a construction site in the Gaduwa District, where Wike reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with the officer, prompting widespread criticism.

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) condemned Wike’s actions as “reckless and uncivil behaviour,” warning that such conduct damages Nigeria’s image and erodes confidence in governance. In a statement signed by CISLAC Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), the group emphasized that public office requires restraint, humility, and discipline, not arrogance or abuse of power.

“The idea of public officials attacking security personnel is unacceptable and sends a wrong message about the nation. They must be role models, not symbols of impunity,” CISLAC said.

Another advocacy group, #Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, also criticized the minister’s conduct. Its convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi-Fatile, described the incident as “uncalled for, and a direct affront to the honour and integrity of Nigeria’s military institution.”

Fatile urged President Tinubu to call the minister to order and demand a public apology to the Nigerian Armed Forces, highlighting that the officer’s composure and professional restraint during the confrontation reflected the core values of discipline and respect in the military.

“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate video circulating on social media showing the Minister of the FCT engaging in a heated altercation with a naval officer. This act sends a dangerous signal that political authority can trample on institutional discipline and national honour,” Fatile said.

Both CISLAC and the advocacy group stressed that political leaders must support the Armed Forces and other security agencies, whose sacrifices are crucial in defending the nation against insecurity and threats. They called on civil society, religious leaders, and citizens to stand in solidarity with Nigeria’s military, warning that attempts to demoralize the nation’s defenders could weaken the country’s collective security.

CISLAC further noted that Wike’s behavior reflects a consistent pattern of arrogance and lack of emotional control, dating back to his tenure as Rivers State governor.
